These are the typical questions I hear every day. I will do my best to answer every one accurately, but it is always best to get a terrazzo expert on site to answer all your question while they are looking at your floor. If you would like to ask a question please feel free to leave it in the comments and I will add it as soon as I have the time.  Thank you.

1.  Q. What is terrazzo?

A. Terrazzo is a mixture of marble or other stones mixed and broadcast into Portland cement or epoxy thin set.

2.  Q. Why has terrazzo seen such an increase in popularity of late?

A. Terrazzo flooring’s resurgence can be attributed to

I. Its green flooring label

II. The lowest cost of maintenance of any flooring

III. New polishing techniques that make it both beautiful and resilient

IV. The long, long life of terrazzo flooring. It can outlive most homeowners.

3.   Q. What should I use to clean my terrazzo flooring?

A. Most terrazzo flooring should be cleaned with a neutral cleaner however, if your floors have been crystallized by a terrazzo restoration company, then you can use a weak vinegar and water mixture.

4.   Q. How does Safe Dry restore terrazzo?

A. We use a heave grinder that gets down into the floor, so we can eliminate as many flaws and as much damage as possible.  Our floor polishing machine is heavier and has a higher rotation speed than any other company we know of.  We also use up to five different terrazzo restoration systems during the process to give terrazzo floors their best shine possible. Our system is constantly evolving and we switched to our all-dry system over two years ago.

5.  Q. How thick is my terrazzo flooring?

A. Most cement based terrazzo is 5/8 to ¾ of an inch thick, but some older terrazzo is thicker. Epoxy terrazzo is generally 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch thick.

6.  Q. How much flooring is removed during terrazzo restoration?

A. Typical around 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch is removed.

7.   Q. Does your company seal terrazzo floors?

A. We seal every terrazzo floor we restore. Most are sealed with and impregnating sealer. These sealers go into the floor to seal and protect, but do not change the appearance.

8.   Q. How long will my floor last when it is restored?

A. As long as you reseal every five years the floor will not need any polishing for 7 to 10 years when done by Safe Dry.

9. Q. How should I clean my terrazzo flooring?

A. Most terrazzo flooring should be cleaned with a neutral cleaner. However, if your floors have been crystallized by a terrazzo restoration company then you can use a weak vinegar and water mixture.

10.  Q. How does SafeDry restore terrazzo?

A. We use a heave grinder that gets down into the floor, so we can eliminate as many flaws and as much damage as possible.  Our machine is heavier and has a higher rotation speed than any other company we know of.  We also use three different systems at the polishing level to give terrazzo floors their best shine.

11. Q. Should a finish or topical sealer be used on my floors after restoration?

A. If you have a rental property, commercial property, or have pets that will have the occasional accident, then we recommend a topical sealer. If you do not fall into these categories then there is no reason to coat your floors. Our floors shine great without finishes or topical sealers. Why would you want the added maintenance associated with these products?

12. Q. Does your company seal terrazzo floors?

A. We seal every terrazzo floor we restore. Most are sealed with and impregnating sealer. These sealers go into the floor to seal and protest, but do not change the appearance.

13. Q. Can terrazzo flooring be dry polished?

A. Throughout history the best results always came from wet polishing of terrazzo and marble. That has now changed as a new system we are using now allows us to polish completely dry and the results are amazing. The picture at the top of this page is from dry polishing.
